Ransomware and the risk to ATMs

The unprecedented spread of the WannaCry ransomware has prompted many ATM deployers that use Microsoft Windows operating systems to question the risk to their ATMs. The facts as currently understood by DFR Risk Management are that any device (including ATMs) running an unpatched version of Windows is potentially at risk from infection. That said, the impact of an ATM being infected is significantly lower than other components of a countries national infrastructure. An infected ATM would be extremely inconvenient in that it would not be able to serve consumers, but the current version of the ransomware does not appear to have the ability of compromising personal information such as card numbers, nor does it appear to have the ability to control ATM functions such as ‘jackpotting’ the dispenser. ATM deployers should however review their software security and make sure that appropriate patches, whitelisting and anti-virus defences are up-to-date.
